The 74-year-old coach has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for oncology. Fomenko is well-known for his role as the coach of the Ukrainian national team from 2012 to 2016, leading them to Euro 2016. However, the team failed to perform well in the tournament, losing all three matches in Quartet C. Fomenko has also coached various teams in Ukraine and abroad, including Dynamo, CSKA, and Iraq’s Rashid.

On June 23, 2016, Fomenko resigned as head coach of the Ukrainian national team.
