Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zinchenko started at left-back and spent 60 minutes of playing time on the pitch, after which he was replaced by Scot Kieran Tierney with the score 1:0. This is the first replacement for Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta.

The hosts could have opened the scoring in the first minute of the encounter, but the ball after Jacob Murphy’s shot hit Aaron Ramsdale’s post.

Arsenal held off Newcastle’s early onslaught and responded with a goal – in the 14th minute, midfielder Martin Odegaard fired a powerful long-range shot into Nick Pope’s near-post corner.

Early in the second half, the two sides traded scoring chances – first, Newcastle’s Swedish forward headed the post, and then Arsenal’s Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli hit the crossbar.

In the 71st minute, Martinelli raced down the left wing on the counter-attack and delivered a cross, and Newcastle’s Swiss defender Fabian Cher cut the ball into his own goal.

The 26-year-old Zinchenko moved to Arsenal from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, making 33 appearances for the London side in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Arsenal have played 35 games, scored 81 points and are second in the Premier League standings, one point behind leaders Manchester City, with a game in hand for the Citizens.

In the next round of the English Championship, Zinchenko’s team will host Brighton on Sunday, May 14.
