How does the NFL work in its 2022 edition?

The 2022 season of the National Football League arrives with everything. After the adoption, for the first time in history in 2021, of a regular season with 17 games for each team and 18 weeks in total (as each team takes a week off), we will return to this format. It is worth remembering that, years ago, each team played 16 games in the qualifying phase, totaling 17 weeks in the season.

Traditionally, the NFL is comprised of two conferences: the American Conference (AFC) and the National Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions (North, South, East and West), with four teams each, for a total of 16 teams per conference. And 32 teams in total in the league.

The winners of each division (four per conference) qualify for the playoffs, for a total of eight teams. The top three from each conference, in addition to the division champions, complete the 14 ranked teams. They play in a knockout tournament, the playoffs, and the AFC champion faces the NFC champion in Super Bowl LVII.

How does the Los Angeles Chargers arrive

The Los Angeles Chargers currently rank second in the AFC West division with three wins and two losses. Only the Kansas City Chiefs, who have four wins and one loss, are ahead of the Californians.

The Chargers started the season by beating the Las Vegas Raiders 24-19. Then, in Weeks 2 and 3, the team suffered two straight losses to the Kansas City Chiefs (27-24) and Jacksonville Jaguars (38-10). And in the two most recent clashes, L.A. rehabilitated and beat Houston Texans (34-24) and Cleveland Browns (30-28).

And it’s worth noting that quarterback Justin Herbert, a big star for the Chargers, has been playing at the sacrifice since he suffered a fractured rib cartilage in the last quarter of the loss to the Chiefs on Sept. 15.

Still, in addition to his poor performance in the loss to the Jaguars, he had good performances against the Texans and the Browns. So far, the QB has hit 66.5% of his shooting for 1,478 total yards, ten touchdowns and two interceptions, with a rating of 100.8 (the highest in his three-year NFL career so far).

In a narrow victory over the Browns in Week 5, the Los Angeles offense produced 465 total yards, 227 of which were overhead and 238 rushing with the oval. Herbert hit 22 of 34 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown, as well as rushing for 13 more yards.

Catching passes, wide receiver Mike Williams had 10 receptions for 134 yards. And the main offensive standout was running back Austin Ekeler, who rushed 16 times for 173 total yards and a TD, in addition to making four receptions for 26 yards and a TD. Thus, shirt 30 added 199 yards and two touchdowns in the duel.

The most worrying factor for the Chargers was the defense, which conceded 443 total yards, 230 in the air and 213 on the ground. Admittedly, the unit also had a takeaway, with safety Alohi Gilman intercepting Jacony Brissett. But in general terms, the unit led by defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill did not do well.

Right now, the team led by head coach Brandon Staley has the fifth-best offense in the NFL in yards per game (390.4 average) and ninth-best in points (24.4 per game). On the other hand, the defense is the tenth worst in yards conceded to opponents (368.2) and third in points (27.2), behind only the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks defenses, the only ones with averages. of points awarded above 30 per game.

The Chargers’ defensive unit is especially poor against running play, being ninth-worst in that regard, with 130.4 rushing yards allowed per game. So it’s essential to limit the Broncos in this regard if you don’t want to get into trouble with the MNF.

How does the Denver Broncos arrive

Five weeks into the season, the big question remains: Can we already say that the switch to acquire Russell Wilson this past offseason was a big shot in the foot for the Denver Broncos?

Well, it might still be a little premature to make statements like that, but it’s a fact that, so far, Wilson has suffered in Denver. And it does not justify the high investment. The Colorado franchise enters Week 6 with two wins and three losses. The worst is that the offensive performance has been very poor.

Now, to make matters worse, the quarterback suffered an injury near his right shoulder earlier this month, more precisely during the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, and has been training in a limited way.

Despite playing the entire game during last week’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Wilson was clearly not doing well.

In fact, so far, we’ve seen little of the Wilson that we’ve seen during most of his time with the Seattle Seahawks. In five games as a member of the Broncos, No. 3 hit just 59.4% of his passes for 1,254 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Numbers for an average quarterback, something ‘Dangeruss’ has definitely not been for most of his 10+ years in the NFL.

So far, the Broncos lost in Week 1 to the Seahawks (17-16), in Wilson’s reunion with his former team, then beat the Houston Texans (16-9) and San Francisco 49ers (11-10) and, in the last two weeks, they lost to the Raiders (32-23) and Colts (12-9).

The match against the Colts on Thursday Night Football in Week 5 was grim. The Denver team was winning by 9 to 6 until the last quarter and had the chance to practically ‘kill’ the game in a third to four from the 13th row of the Colts field. But with just over two minutes to go, Wilson forced the pass and was intercepted. Then Indianapolis marched across the field and kicked the FG which forced overtime.

In overtime, the Colts won with another three-pointer. This was before the Broncos’ offensive campaign was thwarted with a late-game turnover.

In that game, the Denver Broncou produced 375 offensive yards, being 250 of passes and 125 of runs with the ball. However, Wilson was intercepted twice and looked like a rookie QB, hitting 21 passes for 39 for 274 yards. His passer rating was only 54.9, a very low number.

The Broncos’ best offensive players were running back Melvin Gordon III, with 15 carries for 54 yards, plus three receptions for 49 yards, and wide receiver Courtland Sutton, responsible for five receptions for 74 yards.

The Colorado organization’s defense even managed to keep the team alive in the match throughout the game, still forcing two interceptions, but it wasn’t enough in the face of such incompetence in the attack.

In fact, offensively, the Denver Broncos are mid-table in terms of yards produced, averaging 343.6 per game, but second-worst in points, producing just 15 per game so far.

The team’s defense led by coach Nathaniel Hackett has been doing the work to keep the team in the games. The unit is the third-best in the NFL in yards, yielding just 289 per game for opponents, and the fourth-best in points, with just 16 per game.

The main question this week is whether Russell Wilson will be able to play on Monday Night Football. Everything points to yes. But how limited it will be (or if it will even act) we will only know closer to the MNF.
