Roma head coach José Mourinho has refused to accept the runner-up medal after his team lost the Europa League final to Sevilla. The Portuguese coach threw the medal into the stands immediately after it was presented, where it was caught by a Roma fan. Mourinho has won several major trophies throughout his career, including the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, the Europa League with Manchester United, and the Conference League with Roma this season. Despite the Europa League disappointment, Roma has secured a place in next season’s Europa League group stage by finishing sixth in Serie A.

Roma head coach José Mourinho did not collect the second-place award – the Portuguese immediately eliminated the 2022/23 Europa League finalists’ medal.


José Mourinho lost in the European Cup final for the first time in his career. Previously, the Portuguese specialist had five wins, and this series ended – in the Europa League final with Sevilla (1:1 and 1:4 on penalties).

But for Portuguese experts, there is no second place. “Special” took away the finalist medal right after the award, but he did it in a special way. Mourinho threw the medal into the stands, where it was caught by one of the Rome fans.

Mourinho has won the following trophies:

  • UEFA Cup and Champions League with Porto;
  • Champions League with Inter;
  • Europa League with Manchester United;
  • Conference League with Roma.

Mourinho took over at Roma in the summer of 2021, his contract with the Roma club runs until the summer of 2024.

With a round remaining in Serie A, Roma are in sixth place, guaranteeing them a place in next season’s Europa League group stage, but one point behind Juventus, who could send the Roma club to the Conference League.
