The former defender of Dynamo Kyiv and Italian Milan, now the mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, explained why he did not support the introduction of economic sanctions by Georgia against the occupying country.

Kakha Kaladze believes that Georgia will not be able to inflict significant economic losses on Russia due to products exported to the wrong country.

“We were attacked, they said, we did not participate in the blockade. I want to ask any sane person. Is it possible that if Georgian wine and Georgian agricultural products do not enter the Russian market, then we will destroy the Russian economy? This is absolutely ridiculous.”

Kaladze also said that he did not want to make things worse for the Georgian people.

“On the contrary, we will harm people in need. Those who work 24 hours a day to earn a living.

Why should people close this opportunity? A chance to work hard, sell your product and get paid. After all, this money still goes to Georgia,” Sputnik Georgia quoted Kaladze as saying.

Kaladze started his football career in 1993 playing for Dinamo Tbilisi. In 1998, he moved to Dynamo Kiev, where he played 71 games and scored six goals.

In 2001, Kaladze became a Milan player. With the Milan team, he won one Italian championship, won the Champions League twice, won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup each.

In the summer of 2010, Kaladze moved to Genoa as a free agent. In two years at Genoa, he played 56 games and scored two goals. On May 12, 2012, Kaladze announced his retirement.

After finishing his football career, he entered politics. In autumn 2017, he ran for the post of mayor of Tbilisi. According to the results of the voting held on October 21, he won more than 50% of the votes and won in the first round. In 2021, he was re-elected for a second term.
